WEDDING DJs VS. CLUB DJs - Know the difference Part 2

So in the first blog post we talked about how this is a topic that probably can't be covered in one blog post. In this blog post we will get into skills of being a DJ, because thats what you pay them for right?!?!? Bring the party and also keep it going. When it comes to entertaining people on a regular basis, the Club Dj probably has this in the bag, but I can make arguments for both.

Skills - This includes what the DJ should sound like, seemless transitions, beat matching skills, party tracks, song selection and more. Since the Club DJ play frequently or a specific environment (bar/club) he is probably current with all the hits: Top 40, EDM, Hip hop, etc. and also the classics, the 90s and 2000s. The library of a club DJ has all the nice remixes and edits for a party, a wedding DJ has a little different library. The Wedding DJ has an open format library similar to a club DJ however an experienced Wedding Dj will also have the slow dance tracks, the cheesy wedding tracks that a club DJ would never allow into his laptop. The wedding DJ may not have better and more current tracks but if he has been doing this for a while he should have a pretty good collection. The skill set of a Wedding Dj may be lacking in comparison to a Club DJ because frankly he doesn't play as frequently with the newest tracks. The Club DJs play on better equipment and bring better mixers and turntables to your party because frankly whey are not making the investment in multiple systems because its a lot of money to invest.

Track Selection - This is a difficult one, because the consultation should have discussed this as well as prepping a song list for the event. However from my experience of working and attending weddings I can tell the track selection for a Club and a wedding are total polar opposites. The Club Djs will have all the EDM and Hiphop that is recent and will have some of the pop but they may or maynot have the group dancing songs, i.e. Cupid Shuffle, Cha Cha and other corny wedding songs that everyone enjoys. In weddings you have to start and stop very frequently because of events, announcements, dances, pictures so you basically have to instantly get the party started multiple times and MC, Club DJs can do this however they are used to doing this in a room where everyone like that particular type of music, and in weddings that never happens. So the wedding DJ should know what the crowd like and can play a more open format set.

Groove - This is a difficult one to describe, since Wedding DJs are a niche as well as Club DJs, the are used to playing certain tracks all the time back to back to back. Since the wedding DJ has experience in doing these events, he can recognize a crowd and a wedding and know what has generally worked in prior weddings with the same type of mix of crowd. Being in multiple weddings definitely helps in song selection and also track selection. Even though you like to think your wedding is different, it may look different but the crowds of weddings are very similar. Knowing the questions to ask in the consultation and in the beginning should be your first flag on whether the DJ is right for you, if he has a list and a timeline and a some fillin the blank forms... This is a good thing. If he just ask you for a non-refundable deposit, RED FLAG WARNING!

STAY TUNED TO PART 3....
TILL THEN

WEDDING DJ VS. CLUB DJ... KNOW THE DIFFERENCE WHEN PLANNING YOUR WEDDING

When starting this blog, I wanted to help people plan their wedding and I wanted to become more of a resource to help people. With my blogging on other topics I found out how many people read my articles and gave me feedback on their opinions. Also as an event DJ I post many of live sets on various social media and music platforms for my sound to be heard, however this is a common practice for some but not all.

So the main topic is who should you choose for your wedding? I don't have that answer and the answer varies between every DJ, however since I have been DJ for both night clubs and also Weddings and also the fact that I regularly spin at a Bar venue and that I own my own Mobile DJ business I have pretty good insight with both.

As I was writing this,  I realize this is a multiple blog post... so lets break it the equipment down...

Equipment - This is the first thing you are going to see, as a club DJ the setup is key, to have a club ready setup to key to practicing at home and also the club DJs are heavily influenced by icons and past big time DJs, generally they perfer Technics and use Rane/Pioneer Mixers that run over $1,000 and turntables that are $$$$ also. most of them feel since they bring the club setup they want to be compensated for it. The Wedding DJ will have a different setup, mainly something portable and quick to set up and break down. Wedding DJs generally operate out of something they have been using for a long time, also their equipment will also include wireless mics various ways to play media, CDJ, AUX Chords, ipod connector ect. Because these people dont travel to nightclubs and perform on this circuit, they have to purchase an entire system instead of just mixers and turntables.

Generally in my experience, a wedding DJ will have a more complete set up for your event, wireless mics, speakers, stands, etc that is essential for a Club DJ and not premium gear, because I know you don't care if he is spinning of a Pioneer/Rane Mixer or a lower level Numark or a DJ controller, as long as it looks professional I pretty sure you don't care.

Now a days as I consult for weddings, the main topic that is always asked of me is uplighting. Now an event/Wedding DJ will have these, more seasoned DJ will have a higher budget and a larger inventory of lighting. As a wedding DJ the first thing I purchased was flood lights, lazers and a fogger with a light stand. Later I then purchased uplighting par cans, now this can run up in the thousands depending on what their vision. A club DJ can probably get some lights but its not going to compare to a wedding DJ, and in reality you are not going to get a separate lighting contract to light your venue. Probably not...

The next Blog Post we will dive into skills of the DJ, but until then please see tmy Wedding Flipboard Magazine and enjoy!
